#Ytsejam Tips For Newcomers

What to do, and what NOT to do on #ytsejam...

The #ytsejam channel is a community, both virtual and real... many of us know each other in real life as well as online. The #ytsejam is a place where we congregate to share our love for Dream Theater, as well as a thousand other interests... it is a place that fosters friendship and fun. If you are around long enough, you will most likely meet some people that you can call your friends for life.

Here are some tips to make your time spent with us a pleasant experience...

  • Do not ask for ops. You will get them when and if you get them, asking for them is merely annoying.

  • When you first enter the channel, do not exclaim "Lets talk about Dream Theater!"... the current conversation could be about Dream Theater, or it could be about something entirely different... it might not even be about music. Think of it as a group of people sitting around chatting... listen to what people are saying, and if you have something to add then do so, but don't expect everyone to suddenly change topic and talk about what YOU want to talk about.

  • Do not introduce yourself by asking "Any girls wanna chat?"... this is not a pick up joint. If you're looking for cybersex, look on EFnet.

  • To be spoken to, you must speak. When you first enter the channel, you may receive a "hello" from someone that is paying attention, but more often than not you will have to take the initiative yourself. I can't count how many times I have seen people pout and leave the channel because "everyone is ignoring me", when they weren't even contributing to the conversation themselves.

  • Don't intentionally start a fight. We know an asshole when we see one... if it's obvious you're only there to start trouble, you're bound to be kicked by one of the many of us wielding ops.
